Activity with Ethiopian immigrants in south Netanya

Musical director: Naomi Faran
Conductor: Sharon Ram
Pianist: Arnon Zimra

Background

Another special Moran Choir project is the integration into the choir of girls from the Ethiopian immigrant community in Netanya. In 2006 contact was initiated with the kindergarten-based Nordau Enrichment Center directed by Varda Perry, the PACT Project, the Ministry of Education and Netanya Municipality with the aim of enabling the integration of girls of Ethiopian origin from south Netanya’s Dora neighborhood to sing with Moran Choir.

An outstanding connection between the young choristers and Ethiopian children as young as kindergarten age resulted from this partnership of song, movement and a love of music. The young girls are fully active participants in the choir’s activities, rehearsals and concerts and also have an opportunity to introduce their own native music and culture.

Over the intervening years, the girls’ accompanying parents have also come to appreciate the value of this link that connects them with Israeli culture, enables the children to realize their talents and abilities and boosts their self esteem.
