Children at risk at Tokayer Boarding School
Musical director: Naomi Faran
Conductor: Sharon Ram
Pianist: Arnon Zimra
The Children at Risk Choir at Tokyer Boarding School on Kibbutz Bachan was formed in 2002. The connection was the joint brainchild of Emek Hefer Regional Council Head, Nachum Itzkovich, and Moran’s founder Naomi Faran. The project brings together the Moran Youth Choir and youngsters whose status is defined as educationally and therapeutically peripheral.
Rehearsals are held weekly at Tokyer School, with 70 children and youngsters ranging in age from 7 to 15, who are boarders at the facility and the adjoining school, joining forces to make an active contribution to singing. In fact the entire facility can be labeled “a singing school”.
A group selected from among the Tokyer children also attends rehearsals at Beit Yitzhak together with the Moran Youth Choir. The choir rehearsals are not only a musical experience but also an interpersonal and social encounter, encompassing the playing of percussion instruments, the honing of listening skills, voice training, the cultivation of speech, patience and tolerance skills, the enhancement of sensitivity to a variety of words and texts, experiencing the harmony of communal singing and learning how to perform before an audience. The children from Tokyer School learn basic music theory and perform songs from some of Israel’s top repertoire.
